Picking a Halloween costume is a big deal. It's your one chance all year to be someone (or something) else. This guide breaks down the options, from solo getups to huge group ideas, so you can nail your look.

A vibrant collage of people in diverse Halloween costumes, including a classic vampire, a superhero, a historical figure, and a pop culture character.

The Magic of Dressing Up

Wearing a costume is what Halloween is all about. This tradition goes way back, over 2,000 years to the Celtic festival of Samhain. People wore animal skins to scare off ghosts. 1

Today, we do it to express ourselves. A costume tells a story, even if it's just for one night. 1

The Cast of Characters

Costume Ideas for Women

Women's costume options are huge, way beyond the old princess and witch standbys. Now you can be complex anti-heroines, tough professionals, or characters that flip old stories on their head. 2

Two women in elaborate costumes, one as Cleopatra with a golden headdress and the other as the Greek goddess Athena with a helmet and spear.

Want to look powerful? Go historical or mythological. An ancient Egyptian royal like Cleopatra means golden collars, fancy headdresses, and flowing gowns. 5 Or try a Greek goddess, Athena needs a spear and a crested helmet, while Aphrodite is all about flowers and flowy fabrics. 6

If you like the spooky side, the classic horror vixen is always a good look. Think the Bride of Frankenstein, with her iconic lightning-streaked hair and stitches. 8 Female vampires can be anything from a gothic countess in velvet and lace to a modern punk-rock bloodsucker. 10

Pop culture gives you tons of glamorous or clever options. Barbie is a big one, you can be classic Malibu Barbie or the wonderfully strange "Weird Barbie." 12 The witches from the musical Wicked are a great duo, Glinda in her sparkly pink gown and Elphaba in her powerful black dress. 13 YA heroines like Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games are perfect for showing strength, with her arena gear or Mockingjay armor. 15

Costume Ideas for Men

For guys, you can go heroic or sinister. Action stars like Indiana Jones or the pilots from Top Gun are easy heroic choices. 16 Superheroes are always popular, like Superman or Wolverine in his classic comic-book suit. 17 Or go way back with a Roman Gladiator or Spartan warrior costume for that ancient-strength vibe. 19

A man dressed as the classic Count Dracula, with a high-collared cape and medallion, looking suave and menacing.

But Halloween is really about the classic monsters. Dracula is Bela Lugosi, the suave guy in a black tux, cape with a high collar, and a medallion. 21 Frankenstein's Monster is the tragic giant played by Boris Karloff, with the flat-top head and neck bolts. 9 And the Wolf Man is known for his torn clothes, usually a checked flannel shirt for some reason. 22

Sophisticated villains are fun too. You could be The Joker, with his wild suit and energy, or Beetlejuice in his black-and-white stripes. 20 For a classier look, try Jay Gatsby's 1920s style. 20 Lately, funny and friendly guys are popular costumes, think Ted Lasso or Ryan Reynolds from Welcome to Wrexham , where it's more about attitude than a fancy outfit. 26

Couples Costumes

A couples costume is a performance for two. It needs chemistry to tell a story at a glance. Classic spooky pairs are always a hit, think the devoted Morticia and Gomez Addams, the weird duo of Beetlejuice and Lydia Deetz, or the tragic Frankenstein's Monster and his Bride. 27

A couple dressed as Barbie and Ken in their vibrant 80s-style rollerblading outfits from the Barbie movie.

Pop culture gives us today's power couples. The Barbie movie made Barbie and Ken a huge choice, with options from rollerblading gear to cowboy outfits. 12 Even real-life couple Taylor Swift (in an "Eras" tour outfit) and Travis Kelce (in his football gear) are a popular theme. 29 For a romantic vibe, try Penelope and Colin from Bridgerton in their fancy Regency-era clothes. 27

You don't have to be specific characters. You can be ideas like Day and Night or Salt and Pepper. Pun-based costumes are great for a laugh, a "Netflix and Chill" duo is easy, one person is the logo, the other is in pajamas. 30 Or "Ring of Fire," with one person as Johnny Cash and the other in a dress surrounded by a hoop of flames. 30

Group Costumes

A coordinated group costume makes a big impact. You become a walking spectacle. Dressing as the cast of a show is a popular choice, you could be the spooky Addams Family, the Ghostbusters , or the kids from Stranger Things . 31 Or try something recent, like the stressed-out kitchen crew from The Bear or all the emotions from Inside Out 2 . 31

A group of four friends dressed as the Ghostbusters, complete with jumpsuits, proton packs, and ghost traps, standing in front of a spooky, foggy building.

Thematic groups work great. A coven of witches can all wear black robes but have different styles, like a kitchen witch or a glam enchantress. A zombie horde lets everyone get creative with gore, and a lineup of Greek Gods gives everyone a role, like Zeus with a lightning bolt or Poseidon with a trident. 6 A classic monster mash-up is always a winner, with Dracula, Frankenstein, the Wolf Man, and the Mummy all together. 33

Funny concepts are perfect for big groups. A box of crayons, where everyone wears a different solid color, is simple but looks amazing. 34 You could also be a deck of playing cards, a bunch of condiment bottles, or the characters from the board game Clue. 34

Family Costume Themes

Family costumes have to work for all ages, from babies to adults. Animated movies are perfect for this. You could be the super-powered Parr family from The Incredibles , with a role for everyone. 36 Other ideas include the cast of The Little Mermaid , Peter Pan , or Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory . 36

A family of four dressed as The Incredibles, posing in their red superhero suits against a cityscape backdrop.

Superheroes are another easy family theme, you can assemble as The Avengers or the Fantastic Four. 3 Classic ideas work well too. A circus troupe from The Greatest Showman has roles for a ringmaster, strongman, and clowns. 36 A classic monster family is a great nod to Halloween's roots, or go whimsical with characters from Alice in Wonderland , like Alice, the Mad Hatter, and the Queen of Hearts. 36

Costume Ideas for Teens

Teen costumes are all about what's trending right now on social media and streaming. Viral internet memes make for popular (but short-lived) costumes. Ideas pop up on TikTok and YouTube all the time, like characters from the animated series Skibidi Toilet or other online inside jokes. 37

A teenager in a detailed cosplay costume of a popular anime character, striking a dynamic pose.

Anime and manga are huge, so cosplay is a big deal for Halloween. You'll see characters from series like Naruto , Demon Slayer , Dragon Ball Z , and One Piece . 40 Video games are another major source of inspiration, think avatars from Fortnite or characters from classics like Minecraft or Super Mario Bros . 3

YA books and movies are still popular, you'll see heroines like Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games or students from the Hogwarts houses in the Harry Potter series. 15 Teens also get creative with ironic takes on classics. For example, "Cinderella at 12:01 a.m." (smudged makeup, tired look) or a modern, fashionable version of Jessie from Toy Story . 47

Costume Genres to Explore

Classic Monsters & Gothic Horror

Dracula, Frankenstein's Monster, the Wolf Man... we know exactly what they look like, right? But their classic looks don't come from old books, they come from one place: Universal Pictures in the 1930s and 40s. Universal Pictures both adapted and branded these characters, creating a cinematic universe whose look defined Halloween for generations. The movies were shown on TV, kids bought the plastic costumes, and those designs became locked in our brains. 22

The Universal Effect: The classic looks of Dracula, Frankenstein's Monster, and the Wolf Man weren't born from literature, but from the movie magic of Universal Pictures in the 1930s and 40s. Their cinematic designs became the definitive Halloween blueprint for generations.

Take Dracula. Bram Stoker's 1897 novel Dracula described him as an old man with a bushy mustache, dressed in black. 21 The creepy, rat-like vampire from the 1922 film Nosferatu was a different take. 50 But it was Bela Lugosi in Universal's 1931 Dracula who created the Halloween icon we know today, the suave aristocrat in a tux, a high-collared cape, and a medallion. 21

Frankenstein's Monster is also way different from the book. In Mary Shelley's 1818 novel, he was eight feet tall, smart, and had yellowish skin. 8 The monster we know today was created by makeup artist Jack Pierce and actor Boris Karloff for the 1931 Frankenstein . They gave him the flat-topped head, heavy boots, and neck bolts. 9 The famous green skin? That was just so he'd look pale white in the black-and-white film, but it stuck! 9

The Wolf Man is mostly a Hollywood invention, not from one specific book. 22 Lon Chaney Jr.'s role in the 1941 film The Wolf Man created the look and tragic story. The costume is simple, torn clothes (often a flannel shirt) and amazing makeup by Jack Pierce, who applied layers of yak hair for the transformation scene. 24 This half-man, half-wolf creature is very different from old folklore, where werewolves were often just regular wolves. 52

The Mummy character came from "Egyptomania" in the Victorian era, when people were obsessed with archaeology and the "mummy's curse." 54 But it was Boris Karloff again, in Universal's 1932 film The Mummy , who defined the look. It took eight hours to apply the makeup and 150 yards of linen bandages to create the slow, shambling creature we all know. 48

The Invisible Man's look came straight from H.G. Wells' 1897 novel. The scientist, Griffin, wrapped himself in bandages and wore big goggles to hide that he was invisible. 56 The 1933 Universal movie cemented this look in everyone's minds. The bandaged head, sunglasses, trench coat, and gloves became the classic, clever way to show someone you can't see. 58

Monster In the Book (or Legend) On the Big Screen The Hollywood Makeover
Dracula A tall, old man with an aquiline nose and bushy mustache, dressed all in black. 21 A sophisticated aristocrat in a tuxedo, high-collared cape, and medallion, portrayed by Bela Lugosi. 21 Universal shifted the character from a creature of ancient evil to a symbol of seductive, aristocratic danger, creating the definitive "vampire" look for Halloween.
Frankenstein's Monster An eight-foot-tall, intelligent being with flowing black hair and yellowish, translucent skin. 8 A mute, lumbering giant with a flat-topped head, green skin, and neck bolts, portrayed by Boris Karloff. 9 The studio created a more visually monstrous and tragic figure. The green skin and neck bolts, inventions of the film, are now inseparable from the character's identity.
The Wolf Man Varies in folklore, often a person who transforms into a literal wolf or wears a wolf pelt. 52 A tormented man in torn, everyday clothes (often a checked shirt) who transforms into a bipedal, humanoid wolf. 24 Universal created the modern werewolf archetype, blending human and wolf features into a monstrous hybrid that became the standard for horror films and costumes.
The Mummy Rooted in Victorian-era fascination with Egypt and curses, no single literary source for the walking mummy. 5 An ancient priest, Imhotep, who is reanimated and appears as a shambling figure wrapped in linen bandages, portrayed by Boris Karloff. 55 The 1932 film gave form to a popular superstition, creating the iconic, slow-moving bandaged monster that is a Halloween staple.
The Invisible Man A scientist who conceals his invisibility with a long coat, gloves, a wide-brimmed hat, and his face "entirely hidden by bandages." 56 A scientist whose disguise consists of a trench coat, gloves, a fedora, dark sunglasses, and a meticulously bandaged head. 58 The film standardized the "disguise" as the costume itself, creating a simple yet brilliant visual representation of an unseen presence that is easy to replicate.

Pop Culture Hits

Halloween is basically a time capsule of the year's biggest pop culture moments. The sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice brings back its famous characters with a new spin. Beetlejuice has his striped suit, but it's now old and scuffed up. 60 Lydia Deetz has a more mature "high-end hippie goth" style, while her daughter, Astrid Deetz, has a modern grunge look. 62

Three people costumed as characters from Beetlejuice Beetlejuice: Beetlejuice in a worn striped suit, Lydia in a goth style, and Astrid in a grunge look.

The Wicked movie brings some amazing fantasy designs to life. Glinda the Good Witch has a huge pink "bubble dress" made of silk organza and covered in sequins. 13 In stark contrast, Elphaba's look is the total opposite, with powerful black gowns made from fabric that looks like mushroom gills or tree bark. 13

The superhero world keeps giving us new costumes. Deadpool & Wolverine features Wolverine's classic yellow and blue suit from the comics, with shoulder armor and detachable sleeves. 64 Deadpool wears his familiar red jumpsuit with black pleather accents and a ton of holsters and pouches for his weapons. 64

From animation, Inside Out 2 has a whole new crew of emotions. Anxiety is orange, with a striped sweater and spiky hair. 66 Envy is tiny and teal, Ennui is a slacker in a navy sweatsuit, and Embarrassment is a big guy in a purple hoodie. 66 Music has inspired trends too, like Beyoncé's "Cowboycore" (big hats, denim, fringe) or Sabrina Carpenter's "Short n' Sweet" style (sparkly corsets, babydoll dresses). 29

Historical & Period Costumes

Dressing up from a past era is a chance to get the details right. A Roman Gladiator costume, for instance, should have a canvas loincloth known as a subligaculum , arm and leg armor, a leather belt, and a specific helmet. 68 Just a heads-up, movies like Gladiator often add flashy stuff that isn't historically accurate. 68

Accuracy vs. Hollywood: When creating a historical costume, remember that movies often prioritize drama over accuracy. For an authentic look, research historical garments like the Roman subligaculum or Renaissance sumptuary laws, rather than relying solely on film portrayals.

The Renaissance is great for fancy costumes. What you wore showed your status, with laws saying who could wear certain fabrics and colors. 70 Women wore gowns with tight tops and full skirts, often with fancy, detachable sleeves. 72 Men's fashion was all about a broad silhouette, with a fitted top (doublet), a jacket (jerkin), and puffy pants over hose. 73

For a spookier historical look, try a Victorian Ghost. This costume is all about 19th-century gothic style. Start with a high-necked dress or flowing nightgown, usually in white or gray. 75 Then mess it up, add fake cobwebs, and use makeup to look pale. A little black hairspray on the clothes makes them look dusty, and blacklight face paint can add a supernatural glow. 76

Fantasy & Mythological Creatures

Fantasy costumes let you be magical creatures. Elves and fairies are classic choices from the enchanted forest. Fairy costumes are usually delicate, with flowing pastel clothes, flowers, and wings. 78 Elf costumes are more earthy, with green and brown tunics, cloaks, and of course, pointed ears. 78

A person dressed as a woodland elf with pointed ears and a green tunic stands next to a person in a delicate fairy costume with pastel wings.

The Greek gods are another powerful option. Most of these costumes start with a simple toga or a chiton (a draped garment). Gold accents like laurel wreaths and arm cuffs work well. 7 The key is having the right prop, a thunderbolt for Zeus, a trident for Poseidon, a helmet and spear for Athena, or winged sandals for Hermes. 6

Modern Horror & Slasher Icons

Modern horror villains are terrifying because they're simple and relentless. Michael Myers from the Halloween franchise is the perfect example. His costume is just a dark blue mechanic's jumpsuit, work boots, and a kitchen knife. 82 The most important part is the blank white mask that makes him seem inhuman. You also have to nail his slow, unstoppable walk. 82

A side-by-side view of a person in a Michael Myers costume with a white mask and jumpsuit, and another person in the Ghostface costume with the screaming mask and black robe.

The Ghostface killer from the Scream series uses a store-bought costume to be scary. The mask was a real product called "Peanut Eyed Ghost" that director Wes Craven found. 84 Inspired by the painting "The Scream," the mask, paired with a black hooded robe, turned the killer into a reaper-like figure. 86 The voice-changer for the phone calls is the final touch. 86

Funny & Pun Costumes

Sometimes you want to make people laugh, not scream. Pun costumes are all about clever wordplay. The "Cereal Killer" is a classic, just stick empty mini cereal boxes to a shirt and carry a fake knife. 4 A "Deviled Egg" is an egg costume with devil horns and a tail. 89

A person wearing a 'Cereal Killer' pun costume, with mini cereal boxes attached to their shirt and a fake, bloody knife.

These costumes often riff on common sayings. A "Social Butterfly" could have wings with social media logos on them. "Holy Guacamole" is an avocado with a halo and wings. 30 Or "Identity Theft," just wear a coat covered in "Hello, My Name Is..." stickers with different names on them. 4

Some costumes are just plain funny. The "Tacky Tourist" with a loud Hawaiian shirt, socks with sandals, and a fanny pack is always recognizable. 90 For a low-effort joke, wear a white T-shirt that says "Error 404: Costume Not Found." 91 These costumes are great conversation starters.

DIY & Budget-Friendly Ideas

Halloween is all about creativity, and nothing says that like a DIY costume. The classic sheet ghost is the original DIY project. You can use a floral sheet for a cottage-core ghost, or add a hat and sunglasses to give it some personality. 33

Shop Your Closet: The most budget-friendly costumes start with what you already own. A black dress, a plaid shirt, or a simple suit can be the base for dozens of iconic characters. The key is to accessorize creatively.

Cardboard boxes are a DIY goldmine. You can build a robot, a race car, or even a playable Tetris piece. 93 A scarecrow is another easy one, just use a flannel shirt, old jeans, a straw hat, and stuff some straw or raffia in the cuffs. 92

Using clothes you already have is the secret to cheap costumes. A simple black dress works for Wednesday Addams or a witch. 95 A plaid shirt could be for a lumberjack or a werewolf. 20 A suit and sunglasses makes you an agent from Men in Black . 96 The best costumes come from creativity, not a big budget.

Go Be Somebody Else

So that's the rundown. From Hollywood monsters to internet memes, a costume is your ticket to being someone else for a night. It's a story you wear. So whether you make it yourself from cardboard or buy the perfect replica, just have fun with it. That's what Halloween is all about.
