Animatronics for Beginners

Animatronics sounds intimidating, but at the yard haunt level it just means "props that move." Your first animated prop can be as simple as a skull on a servo that turns to look at visitors, or a wiper-motor-driven arm that raises up. Start simple, learn the basics, and build up from there.

Types of Motion

MechanismBest ForCostDifficulty
Servo motorSmall precise movements (turning head, moving jaw)$5-20Easy
Wiper motorStrong repetitive motion (raising arm, rocking body)$15-30Medium
Pneumatic cylinderFast linear motion (pop-ups, lunging)$50+Advanced
Deer motor / rotisserieSlow rotation or cranking$10-20Easy

First Project: Turning Head

Mount a servo motor inside a plastic skull. Connect the servo to an Arduino with a PIR motion sensor. When someone walks by, the skull slowly turns to face them. This requires basic wiring and a few lines of Arduino code. There are ready-made sketches available in the Arduino community.

Parts List

  • Standard servo motor (SG90 or MG996R)
  • Arduino Uno or Nano (see Arduino guide)
  • PIR motion sensor module
  • Plastic or foam skull
  • Hot glue, wire, 9V battery or USB power bank
